Scheme fees themselves are modest — Green Tourism starts around £85 to set up plus an annual membership scaled by room count, and Green Key typically runs from a few hundred to a couple of thousand pounds a year including the audit. The real cost is the preparation. A sustainability consultant charges £400–£1,000 a day, and a first certification project routinely runs to several thousand pounds because collating evidence across energy, water, waste, procurement and staff training takes 15–40 hours of management time. The EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (2024/825) applies from 27 September 2026. It prohibits sustainability labels that are not based on a certification scheme which is third-party verified and independent of the trader, and it bans self-created eco-labels outright. It applies to UK businesses that market to EU consumers — which includes most hotels taking European bookings through online travel agents. In practice the enforcement most hotels feel first is commercial rather than legal: booking platforms are tightening which certifications qualify for their sustainability filters.

No — most properties start with no certification at all. The free diagnostic gives you a baseline score across eight impact areas in about ten minutes, shows where you fall short of recognised minimum standards, and tells you which scheme is the best fit for your property type and guest mix. Certification comes later, if and when you decide to pursue it.

The assessment is mapped to the GSTC Hotel Standard, Green Key criteria, the WTTC and Sustainable Hospitality Alliance Hotel Sustainability Basics, ISO 14001 environmental management principles, and UK statutory requirements such as Simpler Recycling. Questions reflecting a legal obligation are flagged separately from voluntary good practice, because failing one is a compliance issue rather than a scoring one.

Yes, and that is deliberate. Our scoring methodology is published in full — every section weight, every tier threshold, how N/A answers are handled, and the rounding rule. Each report includes a verification export containing your raw answers, the complete ruleset, each formula written out, and every carbon conversion factor with its published government source and year. A third party can recompute every figure without any access to our systems. A score nobody can check is just an opinion.

No. Scoring is performed by a deterministic rules engine — the same answers always produce the same result. AI is used in exactly two places, neither of which touches the score: reading values from documents you upload, where every extracted figure is shown to you for confirmation before it is stored; and writing plain-language explanations of results that have already been calculated. AI-written text is labelled as guidance wherever it appears.

It depends where you start. A property already measuring energy and water with policies in place can often be ready in a single quarter. One starting from nothing typically needs six to twelve months, because some evidence — a full year of utility bills, staff training records, waste transfer notes — can only be accumulated over time. Your roadmap is sequenced into 30, 60 and 90-day phases so you always know what to do next rather than facing the whole thing at once.

Independent UK hotels, typically 15 to 150 rooms, where nobody has sustainability in their job title and the general manager is doing it alongside everything else. Roughly 57% of UK hotels are independent and very few hold any certification, which is precisely the gap this exists to close. Larger groups can run multiple properties, though the deepest fit is the single-site independent.
